A large concrete construction company was looking for a way to streamline the construction process by making construction drawings more easily accessible to construction workers in the field. After several months of researching commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) applications, the construction company contacted us to develop an application that met their needs.

The concrete construction company builds large parking garages and multi-family residences in several eastern states. As part of a larger initiative to streamline production and cut costs, they were looking for ways to use computer aided technology to improve their efficiencies and reduce construction time.
As construction progresses, various construction drawings are reviewed to insure that items like footings, rebar and plumbing are constructed and installed correctly. These construction drawings are contained in a master plan book and it can be very time consuming to locate the correct construction drawing. Crew foremen were manually shuffling through pages of the master plan book trying to find the correct construction drawing for a particular part of the construction site.
A custom application was developed that runs on a rugged mobile computer which uses GPS to determine the location of the user in the construction site. Based on the location of the user, the application brings up construction drawings specific to the user’s location in the construction site.
Users use a CAD program running on the rugged computer and see a “GPS marker” indicating their location within the construction site. As the user moves around the construction site, a dynamic document list changes, indicating the construction drawings relevant to their current position. The appropriate drawing can be immediately viewed simply by double-clicking on it in the list.
The application is designed to reduce the amount of time construction workers spend finding construction drawings at a construction site.
